Overview
This guide explains how to install different types of applications on your work Windows device:
- Required Intune Applications: These applications install automatically on your device as mandated by your IT department.
- Available Intune Applications: These applications are optional but can be easily installed through the Company Portal.
- Unpackaged Applications (Not in Company Portal): These require manual installation and involve some additional security considerations (explained below).
Steps
Required Intune Applications
Intune, a mobile device management (MDM) tool, can automatically install essential applications on your device. You won't need to take any action for these applications to appear.
Available Intune Applications
For applications your IT department makes available but doesn't mandate, you can install them through the Company Portal:
- Open the Company Portal app. This app should already be present on your work device.
- Browse or search for the desired application. You can browse categories or use the search bar to find the specific app you need.
- Click "Install" next to the application. The application will download and install on your device.
Installing Manually Downloaded Applications (Not in Company Portal)
Important Security Note: Installing applications not found in the Company Portal can introduce security risks. These applications haven't gone through Microsoft's verification process, increasing the chance of malware infection. Only proceed with these steps if explicitly instructed by your IT department and understand the potential risks involved.
Here's how to install an unpackaged application:
Before you begin:
- Obtain the local administrator password for your device from your IT department. Do not share this password with anyone.
- Identify the local administrator username using these steps:
- Right-click on the Start Menu and select "Computer Management."
- In the left-hand pane, expand "Local Users and Groups" and then "Users."
- Find the user account that doesn't have a down arrow on its icon. This is the local administrator username.
Note: You can obtain the LAPS password for the device by following this article - How to obtain Windows LAPS Password from Microsoft Intune – Devicie Support Home
Installation Steps:
- Download the required software from a trusted source approved by your IT department.
- Copy the downloaded package from your Downloads folder to a location like C:\ or C:\Temp.
- Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and right-click on the copied application file.
- Select "Run as a different user".
- In the login window, type the local administrator username and password in the format ".\username" (including the dot and backslash).
- Click "OK" to begin the installation process.
Summary:
This guide explained how to install different types of applications on your work device. Remember, required Intune applications install automatically, while available applications can be installed through the Company Portal. Unpackaged applications require extra caution due to security risks and should only be installed with the explicit approval of your IT department. Always follow their instructions carefully.
