How to fix Windows Hello for Business "Something went wrong" Message

Overview

In this article we will cover how to fix an issue that may prevent users from setting up Windows Hello for Business (WHfB).

Users may receive an error message during the setup:
"Something went wrongTry again or select Cancel to setup your device later".

This issue may affect Windows 10 and Windows 11 WHfB setup.

Steps

There are currently two known fixes for this issue. Start with the first fix and if it doesn't work try the second option. Both options require that you sign in to the device using the local admin account.

1. Reset the facial recognition and fingerprint options

  1. Sign in to the device using an admin account.
  2. Press the Win + I key combination.

  3. Now go to Accounts from the left tab.

  4. Click on Sign-in options.

  5. Now locate Facial recognition and Fingerprint recognition.

  6. Click on Remove to reset them.

  7. Now click on Get started and follow on-screen instructions to continue setting up new facial and fingerprint recognition.

  8. When done, restart your computer.

2. Reinstall the biometrics driver

  1. Sign in to the device using an admin account.
  2. Press the Win+ X keys and choose Device Manager.
  3. Click the arrow symbol on Biometric devices to expand this section.
  4. Now right-click on Windows Hello face software and click on Uninstall device.
  5. Reboot your computer.
