How to disable Admin-Controlled Migration to new Outlook for Windows with Microsoft Intune

This knowledge base will demonstrate how disable Admin-Controlled Migration to new Outlook for Windows with Microsoft Intune.

Microsoft Outlook Classic is still available until at least 2029, more information can be found here.

Note: Microsoft will start automatically migrating customers to the new Outlook for Windows from 1st January 2025. Automatic Migration will start in January 2025 for small businesses and from April 2026 for Enterprises.

Configuration

There are two ways of making these changes:

  • Registry
  • Microsoft Intune: Device Configuration Profile

Registry

To disable the admin-controlled migration, modify the registry key with the following:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General]
"DoNewOutlookAutoMigration"= dword:00000000

Microsoft Intune: Device Configuration Profile

1. By navigating to Windows Configuration Profiles, select Create then select New Policy then select By platform: Windows 10 and later and Profile type: Settings Catalog then select Create.

2. Under Basics tab, enter the following:

Name: Disable Admin-Controlled Migration to new Outlook
Description: Disable Admin-Controlled Migration to new Outlook
Then select Next

3. Under Configuration Settings tab, select Add Setting. In the search for a setting, search for the following:

Hide the “Try the new Outlook” toggle in Outlook (User) set as Enabled
Admin-Controlled Migration to New Outlook (User) set as Disabled

Then select Next.

4. Under Scope tags, leave as default then select Next.
5. Under Assignments, select your required user group then select Next.
6. Under Review + create, review your settings then select Next.


7. On the device, sync from Company Portal to receive the policy. Re-open Outlook where "Try the new outlook" ribbon has been removed.

Checking the registry, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\options\general, two DWORDs are created.
