Guide to reviewing new configuration

A step by step guide to verify Devicie configuration in your newly connected tenant

First-time onboarding? Read this after:
Validating Devicie Foundation

The purpose of this guide is to step you through the process of testing and Devicie configuration content (runbooks, templates or baselines) that has been deployed in your recently connected tenant. Typically, this guide is used by new customers as part of initial onboarding, or by our MSP partners when they are connecting a new customer tenant.

Before you begin this process, please ensure you have already completed the following steps:
✅ Authorized the Devicie Automation enterprise application (more info)
✅ Completed the tenant preparation checklist (more info)
✅ Set up user and device groups to receive Devicie configuration (more info)
✅ Deployed Devicie configuration content into the tenant
✅ Have a test device and user ready

Set up your test device

The first step is to set up a test user and device to start receiving the new Devicie configurations.

1. Wipe your physical device, or build a clean new virtual machine

The Devicie recommendation is to use a physical device, if possible. If the device already has Windows installed, then you can import the device into Intune (see step 2 below) prior to wiping. If you need to use a virtual machine, then make sure it is a clean new build.

2. Import the device into Intune using the hardware hash

As part of tenant preparation, we recommend blocking personal devices from enrolling into Intune. So to enrol corporate devices into Intune, you will need to import them using their hardware ID. For detail on this process read below:

3. Add the relevant group tag to the device

This is the tag that you set up during group creation. The device group should have been set up as a dynamic group with tag-based rules. You will need to add a group tag to the test device that meets the criteria of the rule in order for this step to work. The tag will ensure that the device is added to the correct group and will then begin to receive the Devicie configurations that you have deployed.

🛟 If you haven't completed the dynamic group creation steps yet, detailed instructions can be found here: Creating groups in a new tenant

4. Add the test user to the relevant user group

You will also need to manually assign the test user to the relevant user group. This is to ensure that any user based configurations are also being correctly assigned.

Device verification

Now that your test device and user are both receiving the new Devicie configurations, you are now ready to begin the verification process.
  1. Login to the test device as the test user, and complete the device build process
  2. Verify configuration outcomes
    1. Each piece of Devicie configuration content is focused on delivering specific outcomes and has been rigorously tested. The recommended way to test our content is to define the outcomes you are trying to achieve in your environment and then step through each scenario required to verify these outcomes.
  3. Test application outcomes
    1. Verify that the assigned applications have been installed and run as expected.
  4. Test compliance outcomes
    1. Within the Devicie portal there are a number of compliance reports for you to review. You can use these to review how compliant your test device is against your specific goals.
  5. Add/remove content to address any outcome gaps
    1. If your testing has revealed unexpected outcomes, then you may wish to make configuration changes. To do this, you can go to the Templates section of the Devicie portal to make and deploy changes to your environment.
  6. Access support where needed
    1. If you face any challenges that you are unable to resolve with this process and use of the knowledge base, then we encourage you to contact support for further assistance. If you are a new customer going through your onboarding process, then you may have been given access to a testing feedback register for this as well.

Support resources

The Devicie support team is always available to assist you as needed. You can raise a ticket with the team via the Devicie portal or reach out to your Customer Success contact. If you are a new customer, still going through your onboarding process, then they may also be additional resources provided to help you review Devicie configurations.
